i skate for 30 years and out of a crew of 30 guys 5 killed themselves over the years. i think neurodiversity is a big topic in skateboarding. out of the 30 guys 25 have adhs, which leads to a lot of problems if it´s not adressed.

A lot of it has to do with, I can hear Jake yelling at me already, is slamming your head into concrete while not wearing a helmet. After so many years it starts to take its toll. After some time off I came back to skating when the re-issue era started. Thought Id pick it up right where I left off. WRONG!!! Slammed my head quite a few times the first few sessions. , finally one day driving home from the skatepark , dizzy, nauseous....Fully concussed!

From what i have heard through people that knew him better than me, Jake wasn't the same after that slam in the street at that hill bomb thing they were doing. I know the only thing that made my head feel better was Percocets and Vicoden, They also made me puke so I never got hooked, but I know plenty that have. Then sooner or later that death sentence with a capitol F will rear its ugly head. Phelps, Grosso... countless others. Now people are also dying cause dealers are cutting their coke with it and selling it as just coke. Not even the same fkn sport! Needless to say...I wear a helmet now. It has scratches on it, better than scratches my head

Don't wear a helmet, quit the sport. Hitting your head is a stupid idea regardless of wearing a helmet. Plenty of football players can tell you that they injured their brains while wearing helmets.

Thank you for this piece. It was insightful and nuanced. I really appreciate how you took a ‘many-different-factors’ approach to addiction, instead of just taking old ‘skaters-party-too-much’ route.
